OUR HISTORY

ART BRASIL was set up in 2006 in Stoke-on-Trent, North Staffordshire. Initially the group focussed on sharing CAPOEIRA (the Brazilian martial-art-dance and music form) with the community through weekly classes and workshops for schools and events. As the group thrived and the community membership grew, we increased the range of weekly community classes and workshops to include other forms of Brazilian dance, percussion and song forms. This lead us over time to go by simply 'ART BRASIL', as Capoeira was now only one of the art forms we delivered. We delivered classes for children, families and adults, as well as performing with our groups at community events.

In 2016, we launched an additional branch to our community delivery - working with older adults. We found there was a considerable gap in the delivery of community dance and music locally that catered specifically to older adults. We designed a programme of Brazilian music, dance and song workshops that we deliver (still now) as community classes, as well as one off or regular visits to other groups, including friendship groups , supported accommodation complexes and support groups including those for dementia, stroke, injury rehabilitation, cancer and more. This programme has developed further and now includes general popular music and dance activities, as well as specific Brazilian styles.

To date, in 2025, we have a full weekly timetable of music and dance activities, as well as delivering workshop visits to schools, community groups, older adults groups and more. We work with a number of partners to bring music and dance to everyBody in our community.
